However, that less than optimal season (with just three wins in total) has not deterred this young squad from coming back strong in 2019. Following some excellent recruitment and a summer spent focusing on improvement by competing in the Sub Football tournament at Auckland Domain, the ladies have found their feet and are now reaping the rewards of all their hard work.
There is a really good mix of younger and older ladies and a variety of experience which sets a good foundation. “We are a relatively new side with some of our players only picking up a football for the first time last year” Kimi Tarei explains. “It wasn't a perfect 2018 season for us and we had a few results that didn’t accurately reflect how well we played. Going into this 2019 season, however, the commitment and determination from the team is showing and we're making progress each and every game as shown by our recent successes.”
“If we stick together and keep developing the way we are, there is no doubt that we'll make a very formidable side in the future - and while winning is important, we are here primarily to have fun because we love the sport and we want to be in it. Obviously we'd love to do better than last year, but enjoyment is the number one priority for us.”
None of these achievements could be possible without the solid coaching team made up of Ash Maharaj, Omar Amin and Blake Westcar, as well as the unparalleled dedication from Roverines Captain, Maria Eliza, all of whom volunteer their time and effort. “To have their support and encouragement has given us not only the skills to play well, but also the confidence to continue running onto that pitch week after week. I’m sure the entire team will agree when I say that we are proud to be part of this club and of this team!” says Kimi.
We look forward to the rest of the Roverines season with Sophie McGuinness and Nikoleta Glamuzina taking over the team manager reigns. The Roverines take to the field again this Sunday against Tuakau, with hopes for a fifth win in a row. For anyone wishing to cheer for our girls, your support is always welcome! Kick-off is at 11am on 9 June 2019 and the venue is Dr John Lightbody Reserve (field 1).
